The author considers the initial value problem for the transport equation \[ \begin{aligned} u_t+ b \cdot \nabla u= 0 &\quad\text{in } \mathbb R^n\times (0,T),\\ u(0,x)= u_0(x) &\quad\text{in } \mathbb R^n. \end{aligned} \] He shows uniqueness of weak solution replacing the classical assumption on the data \(\operatorname{div}b\in L^1(0,T; L^\infty(\mathbb R^n))\) by \(\operatorname{div}b \in L^1(0,T; \text{BMO}(\mathbb R^n))\), both for bounded solutions \(u \in L^\infty(0,T; L^\infty(\mathbb R^n))\) as well as for \(u \in L^\infty(0,T; L^p(\mathbb R^n))\), \(1\leq p<\infty\). Moreover, he gives certain stability result with respect to perturbation of initial data in lower integrability spaces. The proof is based on suitable regularization, and a new version of logarithmic Sobolev inequality. An important additional assumption is the boundedness of the support of \(\operatorname{div}b\).
