It is known that \(K\)-functors are well suited to characterize a large class of group \(C^*\)-algebras. In an important paper [A survey of foliations and operator algebras. Operator algebras and applications, Proc. Symp. Pure Math. 38, Part 1, Kingston/Ont. 1980, 521--628 (1982; Zbl 0531.57023)], \textit{A. Connes} has introduced the notion of a \(C^*\)-algebra associated to a measured foliation in order to develop the study of foliated manifolds. In a previous paper [Sci. China, Ser. A 52, No. 2, 351--360 (2009; Zbl 1178.22015)], the authors of the paper under review have given a topological classification of foliations formed by the maximal dimensional \(K\)-orbits (\(MD_5\)-foliations) of connected \(MD_5\)-groups whose Lie algebras have 4-dimensional commutative derived ideals, proving that there are exactly three topological types of such \(MD_5\)-foliations. In the paper under review, a continuation of their work just cited, the authors study the \(K\)-theory of the leaf space of some of the \(MD_5\)-foliations that have been mentioned, describing analytically and characterizing the Connes \(C^*\)-algebras of these foliations by the method of \(K\)-functors.
