The authors study the existence results of \(W_0^{1,1}(\Omega)\) distributional solutions for nonlinear elliptic boundary value problems in a bounded open set \(\Omega\) in \(\mathbb{R^\mathbb{N}}\) of the type: \(\text{div}(a(x,\nu, \nabla\nu))=f(x)\) in \(\Omega\) and \(u=0\) on \(\partial\Omega\), where \(f\in L^m(\Omega)\) (\(m\geq 1\)) and the Carathéodory function \(a:\Omega\times \mathbb{R}\times \mathbb{R^\mathbb{N}}\rightarrow\mathbb{R^\mathbb{N}}\) satisfies the standard hypotheses including the most important special case \(a(x,s,\xi)=|\xi|^{p-2}\xi\) (\(1<p<\mathbb{N}\)). They improve the existence results of the theorems of \textit{L. Boccardo} and \textit{T. Gallouët} [J. Funct. Anal. 87, No. 1, 149--169 (1989; Zbl 0707.35060); Commun. Partial Differ. Equations 17, No. 3--4, 641--655 (1992; Zbl 0812.35043)] in some borderline cases. Similar results for the semilinear problem and the uniqueness of the solution found by the approximation are also considered.
