This paper studies the bifurcation of the attractor of the two-dimensional Swift-Hohenberg equation with periodic and odd boundary condition, as the control parameter varies. When the control parameter crosses a critical value, the trivial solution loses its stability, and a nontrivial attractor emerges. Using center-manifold theory, the authors determine the nature of this attractor, whose dimension can be arbitrarily large, depending on the dimension of the null space of the null space of the linearization around the trivial solution when the control parameter crosses the critical value, which depends on the length of the spatial domain on which the problem is posed. In particular the authors determine the topological type of the attractor, the exact number of singular points on the attractor and the dimensions of their unstable manifolds.
