\textit{S. G. Barwick}, \textit{W.-A. Jackson} and \textit{C. T. Quinn} [J. Geom. 100, No. 1--2, 15--28 (2011; Zbl 1253.51006)] provided a construction of caps in \(\mathrm{PG}(4,q)\) by lifting conics of \(\mathrm{PG}(2,q^2)\). In the paper under review the authors extend this construction to \(\mathrm{AG}(4,q)\) by considering the lifting of union of conics in \(\mathrm{AG}(2,q^2)\). In particular, a family of caps of size \(2(q^2+1)\) in \(\mathrm{AG}(4,q)\) for \(q>2\) is investigated of which the celebrated Pellegrino cap of size 20 in \(\mathrm{AG}(4,3)\) is the smallest example.
