The shape-preserving approximations are considered. The pointwise estimates involving the third modulus of smoothness are established for 3-monotone approximations. The pointwise estimates \[ |F(x)-\varPsi(x)|\leqq c\omega_3(F, \rho_n(x)),\quad x \in [-1,1] \] are achieved for a 3-monotone continuous function \(F\in C[ - 1,1]\). Here \(\rho_n(x) := \frac {1}{n^2} + \frac {\sqrt {1-x^2}}{n}\) and \(c\) is an absolute constant, either \(\varPsi\) is a 3-monotone quadratic spline on the \(n\)th Chebyshev partition or \(\varPsi\) is a 3-monotone polynomial of a degree \(\leqq n\). The basis for the construction of these splines and polynomials is the construction of 3-monotone splines, providing an appropriate order of pointwise approximation, one half of the nodes is prescribed and the other half is free, but ``controlled''.
