A metric-potential pair on a complex manifold \(M\) with \(\dim_{\mathbb C}M\geq 2\) is a pair \((g,\tau)\) where \(g\) is a Kähler metric and \(\tau\) a smooth function on \(M\) such that \(J(\nabla\tau)\) is a nontrivial Killing vector field. Obviously, \(\nabla\tau\) denotes the \(g\)-gradient of \(\tau\). Another metric-potential pair \((g',\tau')\) on \(M\) arises from \((g,\tau)\) by a special biconformal change if there exist two smooth functions \(f\), \(\theta\) on \(M\) such that \[ g'= fg- \theta(d\tau\otimes d\tau+\xi\otimes \xi),\quad \nabla'\tau'= \nabla\tau,\tag{1} \] where \(\xi= g(J(\nabla\tau),\cdot)\). If \(f= \text{const}> 0\), \(\theta= 0\) and \(\tau'= f\tau+ k\), \(k\in\mathbb R\), the special biconformal change in (1) is called trivial. This paper deals with the existence of nontrivial special biconformal changes of metric-potential pairs in complex dimension 2. Firstly, the author characterizes the metric-potential pairs on a compact Kähler surface that admit a nontrivial special biconformal change. This allows to obtain the existence of nontrivial special biconformal changes for metric-potential pairs \((g,\tau)\) on a compact complex surface \(M\) in each of the following cases: (i) \(g\) is a Kähler-Einstein metric with positive scalar curvature and \(M\) admits a nontrivial holomorphic vector field, (ii) \(g\) is a Kähler-Ricci soliton and \(\tau\) a smooth function such that \(\nabla d\tau+ \text{Ric}=\lambda g\), \(\lambda\in\mathbb R\), (iii) \(g\) is a conformally-Einstein, non-Einstein Kähler metric and \(\tau\) is the scalar curvature. Moreover, the author states the existence of nontrivial biconformal changes of \((g,\tau)\) whenever \((M,g)\) is a compact Kähler surface and the integral curves of \(\nabla\tau\) are reparametrized geodesics. The last part of the paper is devoted to the description of a more general type of nontrivial special biconformal changes, that are defined on an open submanifold. In particular, the author considers as ambient manifold the projective space \(\mathbb C P^2\) or the one-point-blowup of \(\mathbb C P^2\).
