    In the paper, the authors investigate the following degenerate parabolic problem \[ \begin{aligned} \partial_t u-c\text{div}(|\nabla u|^{\sigma}\nabla u^m) & = u^p, \qquad x\in D^c,\;t>0,\\ u(x,t) & = f(x), \qquad x\in\partial D,\;t>0,\\ u(x,0) & = u_0(x), \qquad x\in D^c,\end{aligned} \] where \(c>0\), \(\sigma>-1\), \(m>0\), \(\sigma+m>0\), \(p>\max\{1,\sigma+m\}\), and \(D\) is a bounded domain in \(\mathbb R^n\) with a smooth boundary \(\partial D\) and \(D^c:=\mathbb R^n\setminus\overline D\); both \(u_0(x)\) in \(D^c\) and \(f(x)\not\equiv 0\) on \(\partial D\) are nonnegative continuous functions and satisfy the compatibility condition. Let \(l=(\sigma+m)/(\sigma+1)\) and \(\tilde c=mcl^{-(\sigma+1)}\). Then, the above problem becomes the following problem \[ \begin{alignedat}{2} \partial_t u-\tilde c\text{div}(|\nabla u^l|^{\sigma}\nabla u^l) &=u^p,\qquad x\in D^c,\;t>0, \tag{1}\\ u(x,t)&=f(x), \qquad x\in\partial D,\;t>0,\tag{2}\\ u(x,0)&=u_0(x), \qquad x\in D^c. \tag{3}\end{alignedat} \] The main results of the paper are the following two theorems. \textbf{Theorem\ 1.}\quad \textit{Suppose that \(\sigma>-1,m>0,\sigma+m>0,p>\max\{1,\sigma+m\}\), and \(\max\{-1,[(1-m)n-2]/(n+1)\}<\sigma<n-2\). (a) If \(p\leq(\sigma+m)n/(n-\sigma-2)\), then, every positive solution of problem \((1)-(3)\) blows up in finite time. (b) If \(p>(\sigma+m)n/(n-\sigma-2)\), then, for some \(f(x)\) and \(u_0(x)\), problem \((1)-(3)\) admits global positive solutions.} \textbf{Theorem\ 2.}\quad\textit{Suppose that \(\sigma>-1,m>0,\sigma+m>0,p>\max\{1,\sigma+m\}\). If \(1\leq n\leq \sigma+2\), then, every positive solution of problem \((1)-(3)\) blows up in finite time.}
