The paper develops energy splitting theorems for two classes of materials -- materials with fading memory and materials with internal state variables. The present work is an extension of the work that has been reported in literature for materials with instantaneous memory. The authors show that that the energy can be split in two parts, namely, the internal energy which is independent of velocity, and the kinetic energy that has a quadratic form in the velocity. The paper is divided in four sections. The first section is introductory and lays the foundation for the goals of work presented in the paper. In the second section, the authors establish an energy splitting theorem for materials whose inertial power is linear in velocity. The technical issues in carrying out the reported work are also outlined. Section 3 deals with the materials that have fading memory. It proves the energy splitting theorem for such materials in five steps, adopting a strong mathematical formulation. The development for the material with internal variables is discussed in Section 4. The paper presents some interesting results, and is quite mathematical.
