The paper treats the problem of characterizing a BMO type space using the compactness of commutators with singular integrals. The subject starts from a remarkable work of \textit{R. Coifman, R. Rochberg} and \textit{G. Weiss} [Ann. Math. 103, 611--635 (1976; Zbl 0326.32011)], who proved that (taking into account works by Uchiyama and Janson) a function \(b\in \text{BMO}\) if and only if the commutator with singular integral \([b,T_\Omega]\) is bounded in \(L^p\), \(1<p<\infty\). A similar characterization of VMO, the BMO-closure of \(C^\infty_c\), was also proved by Uchiyama. The paper under review, however, characterizes the space VMO using the commutator with Marcinkiewicz integral \(\mu_\Omega\). The authors assume less regularity on the kernel \(\Omega\) (\(L^q\)-Dini condition as compared to the Lip-condition in the previously mentioned works) and prove that a BMO function \(b\) belongs to VMO if and only if the commutator \([b,\mu_\Omega]\) is compact in \(L^{p,\lambda}\), \(1<p<\infty\), \(0<\lambda<n\). Here, \(L^{p,\lambda}\) denotes the Morrey space, an extension of the Lebesgue space. A~similar result with \(L^{p,\lambda}\) replaced by \(L^p\) is also obtained in their previous work.
