The authors present an analytical study on the dynamic behavior of an infinitely long, non-homogeneous orthotropic cylindrical shell resting on elastic foundations subjected to the combined action of axial tension, internal compressive load and ring-shaped compressive pressure with constant velocity. The problem is studied by using the theory of vibrations of cylindrical shells. Formulas are derived for the maximum static and dynamic displacements, dynamic factors and critical velocity for homogeneous and non-homogeneous orthotropic cylindrical shells on Winkler or Pasternak elastic foundations and subjected to moving loads. A parametric study is conducted to demonstrate the effects of various factors, such as Winkler or Pasternak foundations, the non-homogeneity and orthotropy of materials, the radius-to-thickness ratio and the velocity of the moving load on the dynamic displacements, dynamic factors and critical values of velocity for cylindrical shells. The elastic foundation is considered to be massless, which is in real physical and technical systems rather exceptional; moreover, this approach leads to non-realistic critical velocities. Also neglecting the internal damping in foundation and shell is problematic. Nevertheless, this supposition enables a closed-form solution. The further mathematical processing and numerical evaluation are very close to those used in the cited literature. No special or post-critical cases are treated, although they have been widely discussed in elderly literature (e.g. Timoshenko).
