Two metrics are said to be projectively equivalent, if they share the same geodesics. Given an ordered pair \((g,\overline{g})\) of projectively equivalent metrics, the authors define the corresponding \((1,1)\)-tensor \(L(g,\overline{g})\), which is called the Benetti tensor. The aim of the present paper is to discuss some geometric properties of such Benetti tensors. In particular, it is shown how Benetti tensors can be helpful for studying the structure of the space of metrics projectively equivalent to a given one. Such a space is then characterized as complement to an algebraic variety.
