The author presents some elementary observations about Diophantine equations that are based on easy inequalities, which he interprets in terms of barycentres. Sample result (Corollary~2.7): If \(x<y\) and \(z\) are positive integers satisfying \(x^k+y^k=z^k\), then \(z<2^{1/k}y\). Some results assume the validity of Beal's conjecture.
