The author is President of Math for America, an organization founded in 2004 and associated to and supported by the Simons Foundation in New York City. Despite its name, the organization has roughly equal numbers of math and science teachers and is for teachers only in New York City. The aim of Math for America (MfA) is to find genuinely accomplished teachers, give them opportunities modeled on professional university life, and trust them to take advantage of the opportunities. To this end, the organization offers a 4-year master teacher fellowship (\$15,000 US) for experienced mathematics teachers (predominantly in grades 6--12) who are currently in the classroom and continue to teach. MfA currently has over 1,000 participants, roughly 10\% of the math and science teachers in New York City. This article contains a detailed description of the program.
