Immersed Floer theory was first developed by \textit{M. Akaho} [Math. Res. Lett. 12, No. 4, 543--550 (2005; Zbl 1078.53089)] and \textit{M. Akahi} and \textit{D. Joyce} [J. Differ. Geom. 86, No. 3, 381--500 (2010; Zbl 1226.53085)]. In the case of curves on Riemann surfaces it appeared in the works of \textit{P. Seidel} [J. Algebr. Geom. 20, No. 4, 727--769 (2011; Zbl 1226.14028)] and \textit{M. Abouzaid} [Adv. Math. 217, No. 3, 1192--1235 (2008; Zbl 1155.57029)]. The theory presented in the paper under review is more general than the theory described by Akaho [loc. cit.], but less general than the theory of Akahi and Joyce [loc. cit.]. In the work of Akaho, a topological condition is imposed that rules out the existence of all holomorphic discs; in contrast to the fact that the positivity condition used by the authors only rules out some discs, and hence the Floer differential can have a non-topological part. One advantage of the construction in the paper under review over the work of Akaho-Joyce is that the authors work over \(\mathbb Z/2 \mathbb Z\) instead of the Novikov ring, and use the less abstract and more computable perturbation scheme of \textit{P. Seidel} [Fukaya categories and Picard-Lefschetz theory. Zürich: European Mathematical Society (EMS) (2008; Zbl 1159.53001)]. The positivity condition deals with bad degenerations of holomorphic curves that would need a more advanced perturbation scheme to take care of. The theory presented by the authors works for arbitrary immersions with clean self-intersection as long as there exists a totally geodesic metric on the image of the immersion.
