Anomalous scattering properties of spherical noble-metal nanoparticles, when exposed to light, were noted since the 1970s. It was recognized that the retractive index of such particles differs from that of metal films, which are widely used in measurements. Further studies demonstrated that the internal field of such particles cannot be adequately described using only transverse (divergence-free) fields and that longitudinal (irrotational) filed components have to be taken into account. The approach whereby longitudinal fields are involved in the Maxwell classical theory is known as a nonlocal effect (NE). In recent years, due to the impressive progress of nanoplasmonics and its wide applications in numerous fields of human activities starting from tumor diagnostics and treatment to liquid crystal displays and solar modules, the problem of accounting for NE is becoming more and more important. Here, a rigorous mathematical model for the scattering of electromagnetic radiation by plasmonic nanoparticles with allowance for NE is considered. In the model, spectral scattering characteristics are studied, and it is shown that the geometry of the scatterrer and the direction and polarization of radiation have a large effect on the scattering properties of plasmonic particles. Numerical results are presented and discussed.
