Consider the problem \(y'=f(y)\), where the right hand side splits into different parts with respect to stiffness, nonlinearity, dynamical behaviour cost and computational cost, for instance. In order to exploit this structure, by employing appropriate time steps for each of the different levels of activity, the authors develop a multirate generalized additive Runke-Kutta scheme (referred to as a multirate GARK scheme). The new scheme includes well-known multirate Runge-Kutta schemes as particular instances and inherits the high level of flexibility of the GARK schemes. The work develops the order conditions for the generalized additive multirate schemes and extends the GARK algebraic stability and monotonicity analysis to the new scheme, by showing that these properties are inherited from the basic schemes in the presence of certain coupling conditions.
