The main result of the paper describes the general solution of the functional equation \[ \sum_{i=1}^n\sum_{j=1}^mF(p_iq_j)= \sum_{i=1}^nG(p_i)\sum_{j=1}^mH(q_j)+\sum_{i=1}^nK(p_i)\sum_{j=1}^mL(q_j), \] where the functions \(F,G,H,K,L:[0,1]\to\mathbb R\) are unknowns such that \(L\) is supposed to be multiplicative on the interior of the domain, satisfying \(L(0)=0\) and \(L(1)=1\), furthermore \(p_1,\dots,p_n\) and \(q_1,\dots,q_m\) are discrete probability distributions. In the proof, some earlier results of Losonczi and Maksa play a key role.
