A classical question is whether a free action of a finite group on a closed surface bounds equivariantly, though not necessarily freely. In the orientable case the question has been answered in great detail in [\textit{A. Ángel} et al., Algebr. Geom. Topol. 24, No. 3, 1623--1654 (2024; Zbl 1552.55005)], and the Bogomolov multiplier is the obstruction. The paper under review sets up the background material to study the question in the non-orientable category, i.e. non-orientable versions of the Schur and Bogomolov multipliers. The non-orientable Bogomolov multipliers vanish for abelian, dihedral, symmetric and alternating groups. There is a group of order \(64\) where it is not trivial. The work will be continued in [\textit{C. Segovia}, ``The unoriented Bogomolov multiplier'', in preparation].
