Cubature rules for minimal numbers of nodes in two dimensions are sought in this paper. Here, the integration takes place over a unit cube and a very general class of weight functions is admitted to be used with this integration. Two approaches to this problem supply a minimal cubature rule without explicitly stating the coefficients on one hand (i.e., its existence is shown in Theorem~3.1, while a general statement about necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of minimal cubature rules of odd degree is given in Theorem~2.1), and provide another one almost or near minimal (i.e., minimal up to one degree) including explicitly calculated coefficients in Theorem~3.4. Here again, a general statement about sufficient conditions for the existence of near minimal cubature rules of odd degree is given in Theorem~2.2. On top of that, the paper analyses Lagrange interpolation at the almost minimal nodes too. That is, the Lagrange polynomials and Lebesgue number are given (Theorems~4.2 and 4.3, respectively).
