The authors construct a ``restriction'' map from the cocenter of a reductive group over a non-Archimedean local field to the cocenter of a Levi subgroup. It is shown that the dual map corresponds to parabolic induction, and that the induction map sends stable generalized functions to stable ones, so that parabolic induction preserves the stability of representations. The normalized induction map does not depend on the parabolic subgroup. In the appendix, a theorem of \textit{G. Lusztig} and \textit{N. Spaltenstein} [J. Lond. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 19, 41--52 (1979; Zbl 0407.20035)] on induced unipotent classes (proved for algebraically closed fields) is extended to all infinite fields. A group version of a theorem about the density of the span of regular semisimple orbital integrals is also proved. Its Lie algebra analog was given by \textit{Harish-Chandra} [Admissible invariant distributions on reductive \(p\)-adic groups. Notes by Stephen DeBacker and Paul J. Sally jun. Providence, RI: American Mathematical Society (1999; Zbl 0928.22017)].
