The problem \(\Delta u=g(u)\) in a domain \(\Omega\subset\mathbb R^n\) and \(u=\infty\) on \(\partial\Omega\) has been studied for various choices of the function \(g\). It is assumed that \(g\) is locally Lipschitz on \(\mathbb R\), that \(g\) is increasing and positive on some interval \((t_0,\infty)\), and that \(\lim_{t\rightarrow t_0}g(t)=0\) holds. The function \(\psi\) defined by \[ \psi(s):=\int_s^\infty \frac{1}{\sqrt{2 G(t)}}\,dt,\qquad\text{where}\qquad G(t)=\int_{t_0}^t g(r)\,dr, \] plays an important role when studying existence and uniqueness of solutions of \(\Delta u=g(u)\). The asymptotic behaviour of \(u\) near the boundary \(\partial\Omega\) is of particular interest and various estimates are known. The goal of the present paper is to provide a unified approach to such type of estimates. Besides first order and higher order estimates, also some uniqueness results and representative examples for the function \(g\) are given.
