The first result in this paper obtained by the author is an important generalization of results of \textit{J. J. Duistermaat} and \textit{V. M. Guillemin} [Invent. Math. 29, 39--79 (1975; Zbl 0307.35071)] and \textit{M. S. Joshi} and \textit{A. Sá Barreto} [J. Funct. Anal. 184, No. 2, 291--312 (2001; Zbl 0997.58010)]. More precisely, for asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds with variable negative curvature, a dynamical wave trace formula is proven. The formula equates the 0-trace (i.e. the renormalized wave trace which is the replacement of the standard wave trace for manifolds with infinite volume) to the lengths of closed geodesics. This formula along with the Poisson formula in [\textit{D. Borthwick}, Commun. Partial Differ. Equations 33, No. 8, 1507--1539 (2008; Zbl 1168.58012)] is used to produce a dynamical resonance-wave trace formula for compact perturbations of convex cocompact hyperbolic manifolds. The main result of the paper under review is a prime orbit theorem for the geodesic flow on negatively curved (i.e. all sectional curvatures being negative) asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds with positive topological entropy. Its importance is based on the fact that neither constant curvature nor finite volume are assumed. Applications of the prime orbit theorem are also discussed.
