For a given Lie algebra \(L\) over a field \(F\), elements \(x\) such that \([x[xL]]\subseteq F x\) are called extremal. Long root elements are extremal in Lie algebras of Chevalley type, i.e., those Lie algebras that are given by the multiplication table of a Chevalley basis, coming from a simple Lie algebra in characteristic 0. In [J. Algebra 236, No. 1, 122--154 (2001; Zbl 1076.17500)], Lie algebras generated by extremal elements were studied and the minimum size of extremal generator sets for classical and exceptional Lie algebras of Chevalley type are obtained. In this paper the authors find presentations of the Lie algebras of classical Chevalley type by means of minimal sets of extremal generators. The relations are described by simple graphs on the generator sets. Four different graphs are displayed, one for each classical family of Lie algebras. Over fields of characteristic not \(2\) and under certain Zariski open conditions, the authors proved that classical Lie algebras can be recovered from the corresponding graphs up to in case \(A_{n-1}\) and \(n\) be divided by the characteristic of the based field.
