The author proves the following theorem: Let \((X, d)\) be a compact metric space and let \(T\) be a mapping on \(X\). Assume that \[ \tfrac12 d(x, Tx)< d(x, y)\text{ implies }d(Tx, Ty)< d(x, y) \] for all \(x,y\in X\). Then \(T\) has unique fixed point. In the above condition, \({1\over 2}\) is the best constant. This theorem is a new type generalization of the well-known Edelstein fixed point theorem.
