The paper studies the existence of homoclinic solutions for the second order non-autonomous system \[ \ddot q+A\dot q-L(t)q+W_q(t,q)=0, \tag{1} \] where \(A\) is an antisymmetric constant matrix, \(L\in C(\mathbb R,\mathbb R^{n^2})\) is a symmetric and positive definite matrix for all \(t\in\mathbb R\), \(W(t,q)=a(t)V(q)\) such that \(a:\mathbb R\to\mathbb R\) is a continuous function and \(V\in C^1(\mathbb R^n,\mathbb R)\). Assuming that \(V(q)\) is subquadratic as \(|q|\to +\infty\) and with some technical restrictions posed on \(A\) and \(L\), two existence criteria that guarantee that system (1) has at least one nontrivial homoclinic solution are established by using standard minimizing argument. In adition, in some particular case the uniqueness of homoclinic solutions of system (1) is also obtained. The results obtained significantly generalize and improve recent results on the matter.
