Let \(R\) be a commutative integral domain. The author investigates the structure of \(R\) subject to the condition that the orbit space \(\,R/\text{Aut}(R)\). Among others, it is proved that if \(R\) is Noetherian, then the orbit space \(\,R/\text{Aut}(R)\) is infinite unless \(R\) is a finite field. An example of an infinite integral domain \(R\) with \(\,R/\text{Aut}(R)\) finite is also given, which answers in positive a question posed by \textit{K. S. Kedlaya} and \textit{B. Poonen} [J. Algebra 293, No. 1, 167--184 (2005; Zbl 1132.12002)].
