This paper establishes the \(L^{2}\) boundedness of a certain Marcinkiewicz integral. Specifically, let \(\Omega :\mathbb{R}^{n}\times \mathbb{R}^{n}\rightarrow \mathbb{R}^{1}\), be such that for any \(\lambda >0,\) \(x,z\in \mathbb{R}^{n}\), \(\Omega (x,\lambda z)=\Omega (x,z)\) and \[ \sup \{\left( \int_{\mathbb{S}^{n-1}}| \Omega (x,z')| ^{q}d\sigma (z')\right) ^{1/q}:x\in \mathbb{R} ^{n}\}<\infty \] and \(\int_{\mathbb{S}^{n-1}}\Omega (x,z')d\sigma (z')=0\), for any \(x\in \mathbb{R}^{n}\). \ If \(\Omega \) satisfies the first two conditions, one says \(\Omega \in L^{\infty }(\mathbb{ R}^{n})\times L^{q}(\mathbb{S}^{n-1})\). Let \(b:\mathbb{R}^{n}\rightarrow \mathbb{R}^{1}\) be such that \(b\in L_{loc}^{1}\left( \mathbb{R}^{n}\right) \) , and such that \(\| b\| _{BMO}:=\sup \{\frac{1}{| Q| }\int_{Q}| b(x)-b_{Q}| dx:Q\) a cube in \(\mathbb{R}^{n}\}<\infty \), i.e. \(b\in BMO\). The authors prove the following theorem: For \(\Omega \) as above with \(q>2(n-1)/n\), and \(b\in BMO\), let \[ F_{t;b;k}(f)(x):=\int_{| x-y| \leq t} \frac{\Omega (x,x-y)}{| x-y| ^{n-1}}\left( b(x)-b(y)\right) ^{k}f(y)dy, \] and \[ \mu _{b;k}(f)(x):=\left( \int_{0}^{\infty }| F_{t;b;k}(f)(x)| ^{2}\frac{dt }{t^{3}}\right) ^{1/2}. \] Then there is a constant \(C>0\) so that \(\| \mu _{b;k}(f)\| _{L^{2}}\leq C\| b\| _{BMO}^{k}\| f\| _{L^{2}}\). The proof depends on a fairly extensive series of estimates, many of which are accomplished in four preliminary Lemmas. The theorem represents an extension of a previous result by \textit{Y. Ding, C.-C. Lin}, and \textit{S. Shao} [Indiana Univ. Math. J. 53, No. 3, 805--821 (2004; Zbl 1074.42004)], who proved the case of \(k=0\). The paper begins with a review of this result along with several other related results, starting with \textit{A. P. Calderón} and \textit{A. Zygmund}'s work on the singular integral operator \(T(f)(x):=p.v.\int_{\mathbb{R}^{n}}\frac{\Omega (x,x-y)}{| x-y| ^{n-1}}f(y)dy\), in [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 78, 209--224 (1955; Zbl 0065.04104)] and in [Appl. Anal. 7, 221--238 (1978; Zbl 0451.42012)], and including more recent work by \textit{F. Chiarenza, M. Frasca} and \textit{P. Longo} [Ric. Math. 40, No. 1, 149--168 (1991; Zbl 0772.35017)], \textit{Y. Ding, S. Lu} and \textit{K. Yabuta} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 275, No. 1, 60--68 (2002; Zbl 1019.42009)] and \textit{A. Torchinsky} and \textit{S. Wang} [Colloq. Math. 60/61, No. 1, 235--243 (1990; Zbl 0731.42019)].
