Optimal convergence estimates for eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a class of singular/stiff perturbed problems are proven. The proofs are constructive in nature and employ elementary techniques that are of interest in computational linear algebra to obtain estimates even for eigenvalues being in gaps of the essential spectrum. Further, also a class of ``regular'' stiff perturbations are identified having provably good asymptotic properties. The arch model from the theory of elasticity is presented as a prototype for this class of perturbations. It is also possible to study model problems that do not satisfy this regularity assumption, an example for this being the Schrödinger operator with singular obstacle potential.
