In this paper the author deals with the smoothness of the interpolant constructed by \textit{A. S. Worsey} and \textit{G. Farin} [Constructive Approximation 3, 99--110 (1987; Zbl 0631.41003)] and respectively the Powell-Sabin interpolant described by \textit{A. J. Worsey} and \textit{B. Piper} [Comput. Aided Geom. Des. 5, No. 3, 177--186 (1988; Zbl 0654.65008)]. Geometric constraints are given for the generalized Clough-Tocher and Powell-Sabin split in order to obtain smooth interpolants. The author shows that for \(n\geq4\) the Clough-Tocher scheme requires essentially the same geometric constraints as the Powell-Sabin one, in order to insure a smooth interpolant. In the Appendix of the paper, an explicit counterexample shows that the Clough-Tocher interpolant in four variables fails in general to be smooth.
