The paper is devoted to the history of the detention of Heinz Hopf, professor of mathematics (algebraic topology) at the ETH in Zürich on January 9th, 1939. He was a ``Halbjude'' - in the jargon of nazism. The paper is based mainly on materials from the archive of the library of ETH. This is a contribution to the history of German mathematics during the nazism.
