Given an \(A_\infty H\)-space \(A\), J. Stasheff has defined the bar construction \({\mathbf B}A\) as a quotient of \(\coprod K_{n+2}\times A^n\), where \(\{K_n\}_{n\geq 0}\) denotes the family of associahedra. Thus \({\mathbf B}A\) can be thought as a `topological realization of a homotopy-simplicial space'. In this paper the author makes the notion of homotopy-simplicial space and its topological realization precise by defining a new category enriched over spaces with the same objects as the simplicial indexing category but with more morphisms. In fact, using two different descriptions of the simplicial indexing category, he finds two ways to do this. The first construction makes the 2-sided bar construction \({\mathbf B}(M;A;N)\) with coefficients in the right (left) \(A\)-module \(M(N)\) into a generalized simplicial space, while the second also makes the cyclic bar construction \({\mathbf B}^{\text{cycl}}(A; M)\) with coefficients in the \(A\)-bimodule \(M\) into a generalized simplicial space. While it is possible to define the cyclic bar construction in a similar way as Stasheff's original definition, the construction becomes more transparent when put into a more general framework. Developing such a framework is the main purpose of this paper. For this the author produces a general method for enriching a category \({\mathcal A}\) over a symmetric monoidal category \({\mathcal C}\) using a non \(\Sigma\)-operad in \({\mathcal C}\). These bar constructions have been used, in a previously published paper, to calculate topological Hochschild homology and cohomology of certain \(A_\infty\)-ring spectra.
