A classical uniqueness theorem of H. Cartan states that a holomorphic automorphism of a bounded domain in a complex space is uniquely determined by its value and the values of its first derivatives (i.e., by its \(1\)-jet) at any point of the domain. It was then shown by E. Cartan, Tanaka, and Chern and Moser that automorphisms of Levi-nondegenerate hypersurfaces are uniquely determined by their \(2\)-jets. Baouendi, Ebenfelt and Rotschild observed that holomorphic nondegeneracy (i.e., absence of nontrivial germs of holomorphic vector fields tangent to the manifold) is necessary in order to have finite jet determination, with the order of the jet depending on the manifold and the point, and they conjectured that it is sufficient as well; this was proved for the hypersurfaces in \(\mathbb C^2\) in [\textit{P. Ebenfelt, B. Lamel} and \textit{D. Zaitsev}, Geom. Funct. Anal. 13, No.~3, 546--573 (2003; Zbl 1032.32025)]. In the present paper, the conjecture is proved in any dimension as a consequence of a more general result on finite jet determination for formal manifolds and formal mappings whose Jacobian determinants do not vanish identically. For the case of points of finite type, the result is extended to generic higher-codimensional manifolds.
