      Let \(X\) be an algebraic variety of general type over \(\mathbb{C} \). The Iitaka-Severi conjecture is proved to be true: The dominant rational maps of finite degree from \(X\) to varieties \(Y\) of general type form a finite set, up to birational isomorphisms. In this paper, the authors find an estimate for the number of these dominant rational maps. They first give a slightly more general version of the rigidity theorem due to Maehara without some technical restrictions. Then they show that the bounds for the degree of a map and of its graph are controlled by the canonical volume. Finally the authors give a more precise version of this finiteness theorem, relating the number of maps to the number of irreducible components of a certain bunch of subvarieties of Chow varieties. In their proof, recent results of the minimal model program are also used.
