Let \(A\) be a commutative ring and \(B\) an \(A\)-algebra. A rigid dualizing complex of \(B\) relative to \(A\) is a pair \((R, \rho)\) of a dualizing complex \(R\) of \(B\) and an isomorphism \(\rho \: R \to \text{Sq}_{B/A} R\). Here \(\text{Sq}_{B/A} R\) is the square of \(R\), defined in [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 360, No. 6, 3211--3248 (2008; Zbl 1165.18009)]. This notion was given by \textit{M. Van den Bergh} [J. Algebra 195, No. 2, 662--679 (1997; Zbl 0894.16020)] if \(A\) is a field. In the present paper, the authors generalized it for commutative algebras over arbitrary commutative ring and established an analogous theory to \textit{R. Hartshorne}'s [Residues and duality. Berlin-Heidelberg-New York: Springer-Verlag (1966; Zbl 0212.26101)]. The ward ``rigid'' means uniqueness. Although dualizing complexes have two arbitrarities: shifting of degree and tensor product with invertible modules, yet the rigid dualizing complex is unique up to isomorphism and such an isomorphism is also unique.
