The authors obtain approximation theorems for solutions of the heat equation, analogous to results known for linear elliptic equations. Via the Cole-Hopf transformation, this gives rise to approximation theorems for one of the simplest examples of a nonlinear partial differential equation, Burgers' equation \[ u_t+(u\cdot \nabla)u=\nu \nabla^2 u-\nabla f(t,x), \quad u=-\nabla p\,. \]
