The authors consider the linear and the energy-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation on rectangular tori \(\mathbb{R}^d/(L_1\mathbb{Z}\times \ldots\times L_d\mathbb{Z})\) with \(L_1, \ldots, L_d\in (0,\infty)\). The dimension \(d\) is arbitrary, the torus may be rational or irrational. The main results of the paper are scale-invariant \(L^P_{t,x}\) Strichartz estimates for \(p>\frac{2(d+2)}{d}\). This improves the analogous Strichartz estimates with an arbitrarily small loss of scaling from [\textit{J. Bourgain} and \textit{C. Demeter}, Ann. Math. (2) 182, No. 1, 351--389 (2015; Zbl 1322.42014)]. As an application the authors prove local well-posedness of the energy-critial nonlinear Schrödinger equation in dimensions \(d\in \{3,4\}\), improving earlier results from [\textit{S. Herr} et al., Duke Math. J. 159, No. 2, 329--349 (2011; Zbl 1230.35130)].
