By Mostow rigidity two closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds \(M\) and \(N\) are homeomorphic if and only if their fundamental groups are isomorphic. Thus the homeomorphism problem for \(M\) and \(N\) can be solved by using Sela's solution of the isomorphism problem for torsion-free word hyperbolic groups. The authors present a new geometric algorithm to decide if two hyperbolic 3-manifolds are homeomorphic. The manifolds have to be given by a triangulation. The second algorithm presented by the authors decides on which geometry a closed orientable 3-manifold which is known to be geometric is modeled.
