In this paper, the authors contruct a r.i. Banach function space \(X\) satisfying the property that for each \(1 < p < \infty\), all the operators from \(\ell^p\) to \(X\) are compact, although there is a non-compact operator from \(\ell^\infty\) in it. Starting from some ideas introduced by Hernández, Raynaud and Semenov for the study of strictly singular operators, the authors proves the following result. Theorem A. There exists a rearrangement invariant space \(X\) on \([0,1]\) such that for every \(1 <p <\infty\), if \(T:\ell^p \to X\) is a bounded operator, then \(T\) is compact. However, this does not imply that all operators from \(\ell^\infty\) to \(X\) is compact, as the authors prove, solving a question that was open regarding these problems. This space \(X\) is given by measurable functions for which some weighted sums of particular seminorms defined as \[ p_\varepsilon(f):= \sup \{ \int_A |f| \,dm : m(A) \leq \varepsilon \}, \] are finite, where \(m\) is Lebesgue measure. The authors use their technique to prove also some (known and unknown) results on rearrangement invariant subspaces with strictly singular inclusions in \(L^1\) (Theorem B).
