Periodic representations and rational approximations of square roots (Q741096)

The authors show relations between the Rédei rational functions \(Q_n(d,z)\) [\textit{L. Rédei}, Acta Sci. Math. 11, 85--92 (1946; Zbl 0061.01607)], the continued fraction \[ \sqrt{d}=\left[z,\overline{\frac{2z}{d-z^2},2z}\right], \] the Newton approximation of \(\sqrt{d}\) with initial condition \(z\in\mathbb Z,\) and the diagonal Padé approximations of \(\sqrt{d}\) centered in \(z^2.\) Also they study \(Q_n(d,z)\) in the field \(\mathbb Q_p\) of the \(p\)-adic numbers for \(z^2\equiv d\) mod \(p.\)
