The article under review gives a survey of major problems and developments dealing with lattice packings and coverings of balls, in particular, and convex bodies, in general, as well as the kissing number problem. In addition, the question of uniqueness of lattice packings and coverings of extreme density is considered. Specifically, the author presents an overview of some of his recent work, demonstrating that for an appropriately defined notion of a generic \(\mathbf 0\)-symmetric convex body in each dimension there exist only finitely many lattice packings (respectively, coverings) of maximum (respectively, minimum) density, where a bounds on such numbers depend on the dimension only. The author also discusses some interesting corollaries of these results.
