An Abelian group is called \textit{algebraically compact} if it is a direct summand of a compact Abelian group (for further details see [\textit{L. Fuchs}, Infinite Abelian Groups Vol. I, chapter VII. New York-London: Academic Press (1970; Zbl 0209.05503)]. Therefore, the author introduces the following notion: A topological ring \(R\) is called \textit{algebraically compact} if its completion \(cR\) is compact and \(R\) is a retract (in the algebraic sense) of \(cR\). The author obtains many interesting results. Among other things, the following is proven:\newline (1) Every linear algebraically compact ring is topologically locally finite; (2) An algebraic compact ring is semisimple if and only if its compact completion is semisimple; (3) An algebraically compact semisimple ring is minimal if and only if it is compact; (4) An algebraically compact ring \(R\) of prime characteristic is a topological direct group sum of a subring and its Jacobson radical. (This extends a result of \textit{D. Zelinsky} [Duke Math. J. 21, 315--322 (1954; Zbl 0055.26204)]); (5) The Levitzki radical of an algebraically compact ring coincides with the Köthe radical. Finally, algebraically compact Boolean rings are considered.
