The author considers the basic question: If \(f_i (z_1,\ldots z_M)=0\), (\(i=1,\dots, M\)) is a system of algebraic (polynomial) equations, each of degree at least \(2\), with the property that the origin \(0=(0,\dots ,0)\) is an isolated solution, what is the codimension of the set of systems \((f_1,\dots f_M)\) such that \(\dim {\mathcal O}_{0, {\mathbb C}^M} \geq m\), for a given \(m\)? This problem is reformulated: ``For a given \(a \geq 1\), estimate the maximal possible multiplicity of the solution for a \textit{generic} tuple of equations \((f_1,\dots ,f_M) \in B\) in a \textit{given} subvariety \(B\) of codimension \(a\)'' (one considers \(a \leq M\)). The upper bounds which are obtained are used to show ``that as \(M\to \infty \) this multiplicity grows no faster than \({\sqrt M}\exp(\omega {\sqrt M} )\)''.
