The purpose of the paper is to investigate the relationship between the action induced by an automorphism of a complex projective surface on line bundles of the surface and dynamical properties of such an automorphism, in particular the positivity of the topological entropy and the existence of periodic curve for the automorphism. Let \(X\) be a connected compact Kähler surface and \(\sigma\) an automorphism of \(X\). Thanks to Theorem 1 of the paper, one can see equivalent conditions to the fact that \(X\) is projective and the entropy of \(\sigma\) is positive. Moreover, Theorem 2 establishes a correspondence between a dynamical property for curves on \(X\) and a fact about line bundles on \(X\). Theorem 2. Let \(X\) be a smooth complex projective surface and let \(\sigma\) be an automorphism of \(X\) with entropy \(\log(\lambda)>0\). Then the following statements are equivalent: (1) There is an ample distinguished line bundle on \(X\). (2) No curve on \(X\) is periodic for \(\sigma\). In the same hypothesis of Theorem 2, Theorem 4 relates the separability of the characteristic polynomial for the action of the pullback of \(\sigma\) on NS\((X)\) and the existence of an ample line bundle on the surface with a condition on the orbit of Chern classes under the action of \(\sigma^*\). \noindent {Theorem 4.} In the same hypothesis of Theorem 2, the following statements are equivalent: (1) There is an ample line bundle on \(X\) whose orbit of Chern classes under \(\sigma^*\) spans NS\((X)\otimes\mathbb R\). (2) The characteristic polynomial for the action of \(\sigma^*\) on NS\((X)\) \textit{is separable}. Examples of many different situations are provided.
