The author defines pseudo-differential operators on a homogeneous tree. By following the proceeding of \textit{S. Zelditch} [J. Funct. Anal. 68, 72--105 (1986; Zbl 0612.58048)] for hyperbolic surfaces, the definition here is based on the Fourier-Helgason transform. General symbol classes are defined and a boundedness theorem is proved in \(L^2\) for the corresponding zero-order pseudo-differential operators. A subclass of semi-classical symbols is then introduced, depending on a small parameter \(\lambda\). In such a framework, a symbolic calculus is organized for \(\lambda\to 0\). Motivation for the paper is the study of the concentration and oscillation properties of eigenfunctions of the discrete Laplacian on the tree. As a first step in this direction, the author computes here the symbol of the commutator of a pseudo-differential operator with the Laplacian.
