Let \(R\) be a Noetherian ring and let \(m,n\) be integers such that \(1\leq m\leq n\). Let \(M=(x_{ij})\) be a \(m\) by \(n\) matrix with entries in \(R\) and \(S=R[T_{1},\dots T_{n}]\) be a polynomial ring over \(R\) with variables \(T_{1},\dots,T_{n}\). \(S\) is a graded ring with deg\(T_{i}=1\) for all \(i\). Let \(f_{i}=\sum_{j=1}^{n}x_{ij}T_{j}\) for \(i=1,\dots,m\) and \(I_{k}(M)\) be the ideal generated by \(k\) by \(k\) minors of \(M\). Let \(I=I_{m}(M)\), \(\mathcal{S}(I)\) be the symmetric algebra of \(I\), and \(\mathcal{R}(I)\) be the Rees algebra of \(I\). In [J. Algebra 73, 248--263 (1981; Zbl 0516.13001)], \textit{L. L. Avramov} showed the following two theorems: Theorem 1: The following conditions are equivalent: (1) grade\(I_{k}(M)\geq m-k+1\) for \(k=1,\dots,m\). (2) grade\((f_{1},\dots,f_{m})S=m\). Theorem 2: The following conditions are equivalent: (1) grade\(I_{k}(M)\geq m-k+2\) for \(k=1,\dots,m\). (2) (i) \(\mathcal{S}(I)\cong\mathcal{R}(I)\), (ii) \(\mathcal{S}(I)\cong S/(f_{1},\dots f_{m})S\) as graded R-algebras, and (iii) grade\((f_{1},\dots,f_{m})S=m\). The author gives elementary proofs of the two theorems.
