The paper studies the number of cusps in one-generic polynomial mappings \(f= (f_1, f_2): \mathbb R^2 \to \mathbb R^2\). One considers the determinants \(J, F_1, F_2, G_1, G_2\) of the Jacobians of \((f_1, f_2)\), of \((J, f_1)\), of \((J, f_2)\), of \((J, F_1)\), and of \((J, f_2)\), respectively. The authors characterize the property of being one-generic by the equality \(I' = \mathbb R[x,y]\) where \(I'\) is the ideal generated by \(J, F_1, F_2, G_1, G_2\). They define global quadratic forms on the algebra \(\mathbb R[x,y] /(J, F_1, F_2)\) in case this has finite dimension, and show that their signatures determine the number of positive and negative cusps. Computations are presented in examples by using SINGULAR.
