This paper considers the construction of symmetric orthogonal wavelets with the dilation factor \(3\). From any finitely supported symmetric \(3\)-orthogonal low-pass filter \(m_0\), this paper studies how to derive all possible finitely supported \(3\)-orthogonal wavelet filter banks \(\{m_0; m_1,m_2\}\) such that both \(m_1\) and \(m_2\) have symmetry. The authors show in Lemma 2 that the symmetry patterns of the high-pass filters \(m_1\) and \(m_2\) are essentially unique and prove in Theorem 1 that all such symmetric orthogonal wavelet filter banks \(\{m_0; m_1,m_2\}\) can be and must be obtained from a canonical symmetric orthogonal wavelet filter bank through the multiplication of a \(2\times 2\) unitary matrix. The authors further study the structure of a special family of such \(2\times 2\) unitary matrix in Lemma~4. The results in this paper answer an important question regarding the construction of all possible symmetric finitely supported orthogonal wavelet filter banks derived from a given \(3\)-orthogonal low-pass filter with symmetry.
