Let \(G\) be a linear connected reductive real Lie group. Let \(H\) be a closed reductive subgroup of \(G\) having only finitely many connected components. Then the homogeneous space \(G/H\) is of reductive type. The authors ask when does a closed reductive subgroup \(L\) of \(G\) act properly on \(G/H\). Let \({g}\), \({h}\) and \({l}\) denote the Lie algebras of \(G\), \(H\) and \(L\), respectively. The authors define the a-hyperbolic rank for a Lie algebra, and they prove that if \(L\) acts properly on \(G/H\), then \[ \text{rank}_{\text{a-hyp}}({l})+\text{rank}_{\text{a-hyp}}({h})\leq \text{rank}_{\text{a-hyp}}({ g}). \] As a corollary they obtain examples of semisimple symmetric spaces without standard compact Clifford-Klein forms.
