It is known that a singular modulus, i.e., a \(j\)-invariant of an elliptic curve with complex multiplication is an algebraic integer (cf. [\textit{S. Lang}, Elliptic functions. Second edition. New York etc.: Springer-Verlag (1987; Zbl 0615.14018)]). The author proves that at most finitely many singular moduli are algebraic units. The proof uses the Liouville inequality from Diophantine approximation, \textit{W. Duke}'s equidistribution theorem [Invent. Math. 92, No. 1, 73--90 (1988; Zbl 0628.10029)] and its generalization due to \textit{L. Clozel} and \textit{E. Ullmo} [in: Contributions to automorphic forms, geometry, and number theory. Papers from the conference in honor of Joseph Shalika on the occasion of his 60th birthday, Johns Hopkins University, USA, 2002. Baltimore, MD: Johns Hopkins University Press. 193--254 (2004; Zbl 1068.11042)], \textit{P. Colmez}'s lower bound for the Faltings height of an elliptic curve (cf. [Compos. Math. 111, No. 3, 359--368 (1998; Zbl 0918.11025)]) and the the results of \textit{Y. Nakkajima} and \textit{Y. Taguchi} [J. Reine Angew. Math. 419, 119--124 (1991; Zbl 0721.11045)]. A reformulation and generalization for modular curves is also given.
